Summer is for S’mores

smoresClassic s’mores are as American as apple pie and just as decadent. The first known printing of a recipe for the campfire mainstay appeared in a 1927 Girl Scout handbook, and called for the very ingredients generations have come to know and love – two graham cracker halves, a toasted marshmallow, and portion of milk chocolate bar. Today, the s’more is still a beloved part of wilderness trips, summer camp, and evenings around the backyard fire pit.                                                          While we can’t deny that the simplicity of a s’more borders on perfection, foodies of late have discovered creative ways to enhance the traditional. If you’re looking for a way to up your s’more game this summer, these ideas will not only add a new twist to your bonfire, but may also add a healthy, nutritional boost:

  1. Consider your chocolate. If you’re looking for a richer flavor plus a boost of antioxidant flavonoids, consider swapping out milk chocolate for a rich, dark chocolate bar – the higher the cocoa percentage, the better. A 100-gram bar of 70% to 85% dark chocolate also packs 67% of your RDA for iron, 58% magnesium, and 89% copper. That’s a splurge with definite health benefits!
  2. Just add fruit. Fruit and chocolate make great companions! Berries in particular add a flavorful punch and robust antioxidant benefits. Try threading a skewer with fresh banana chunks, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, pitted cherries, or pineapple wedges and roasting over the fire before transferring to your one-of-a-kind s’more masterpiece. You can add fruit in addition to roasted marshmallow, or skip the marshmallow and sub in the fruit to reduce added sugar content.
  3. Pack some protein. Another of chocolate’s best pairings? Nuts! Before assembling your s’more, add a smear of nut butter to your graham cracker – try peanut, hazelnut, or almond, for starters. Two tablespoons of nut butter will add 7 or 8 grams of protein to your s’more – a muscle-building bonus!

The sky’s the limit when it comes to creative s’more building.
