A Long Winter’s Night: Sleepy-Time Skincare

Posted on: December 21st, 2016 by Elysiann Bishop

Long Winter's NightDecember 21 is the first official day of winter, which also happens to mark the longest night of the year. Even though the cold season technically begins now, your skin has probably been suffering the effects of the weather for some time – extreme dryness, flaking, redness, and pronounced lines are all skin challenges of the winter months. Take advantage of the long evenings winter brings with some overnight rehab for your skin. Consider these tips for keeping winter skin smooth, supple, and healthy:
Exfoliate. It’s an important step in your skincare year-round, but if you are looking for your moisturizer to work optimally, exfoliating first is a must. The right exfoliation will lift dead skin cells, allowing for maximum penetration of any products you use. We recommend Actifirm Z-Peel for exfoliation that is gentle enough for winter-stressed skin, yet highly effective. Try it in the evening after using a gentle cleanser.

Hydrate and moisturize. If you’ve exfoliated, your skin is ready to accept treatment to its fullest. A serum is a great way to bind moisture to the skin – we love our calming and hydrating Renovation Serum. After applying serum, use a heavy-duty moisturizer like Renovation Cream. Its natural formula offers intensive moisturizing and anti-aging properties without being overly greasy or causing breakouts.

Treat the eye area. If you don’t typically use a specialized eye cream, winter is a great time to start. This area, with its thin skin, is especially prone to the perils of the season. Try Renovation Eye Cream to combat redness, puffiness, dryness, and fine lines.

Run a humidifier. Keeping a humidifier going in your bedroom will help keep skin moist overnight. Consider a whole-house humidifier if your dry skin is extreme. Be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning to prevent air contamination.

Sleep right. Sleeping on your back can help prevent wrinkles from being enhanced (in a bad way) by pressure and position. In addition, sleeping with your head slightly elevated can help minimize puffiness and swelling. Last, if you must sleep on your side, some beauty experts swear by a satin pillowcase to minimize skin creasing.

By taking care with your skincare routine during these long winter nights, you can impact your skin for the better – this season and all year long.
