Summer is for S’mores

Posted on: June 20th, 2018 by Elysiann Bishop

smoresClassic s’mores are as American as apple pie and just as decadent. The first known printing of a recipe for the campfire mainstay appeared in a 1927 Girl Scout handbook, and called for the very ingredients generations have come to know and love – two graham cracker halves, a toasted marshmallow, and portion of milk chocolate bar. Today, the s’more is still a beloved part of wilderness trips, summer camp, and evenings around the backyard fire pit.                                                          While we can’t deny that the simplicity of a s’more borders on perfection, foodies of late have discovered creative ways to enhance the traditional. If you’re looking for a way to up your s’more game this summer, these ideas will not only add a new twist to your bonfire, but may also add a healthy, nutritional boost: (more…)

Although therapies such as drinking seawater or being repeatedly plunged beneath the ocean’s surface are (Thankfully!) no longer in vogue, modern science tells us that there are benefits to be gleaned from a day at the beach. Consider these five perks:                                                        Vitamin D. While there are food sources of Vitamin D, the most effective source continues to be sunshine. This nutrient is essential to the health of bones, skin, and more. Just 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure is plenty of time to reap the benefits, after which you should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. (more…)

Posted on: July 20th, 2016 by Elysiann Bishop

Avoid the Burn! Nothing’s a bigger threat to healthy, youthful skin than the summer sun. Catching a few rays may be oh-so-tempting in the short term, but long term, it’s a losing proposition. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, risk for developing melanoma doubles after enduring more than five sunburns – making sunburn not only uncomfortable, but potentially lethal. Additional statistics make the reality of skin cancer all the more vivid:

1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in a lifetime

Nearly half of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer

1 person dies of melanoma every hour (more…)

Safe Summer Exercise

Posted on: June 29th, 2016 by Elysiann Bishop

Exercise SafeSummer conditions can make exercising outdoors a challenge, but that’s no excuse to skip your workout. Warm weather can make for a great workout – if you proceed with caution and exercise smart. These tips will assure that your fitness regimen is safe, healthy, and enjoyable:

Exercise Early. The hours between 10 AM and 3 PM are most intense for sun and heat. If at all possible, kick off your early morning with exercise. Temperatures will be more pleasant, and it’s a safer time for sun as well.

Use Sun Protection. As always, outdoor activity necessitates a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher on all exposed areas. Try an oil-free formula if breakouts are a problem. Don’t forget to protect lips with (more…)

Better Than The Real Thing: Firming Self Tanner

Posted on: June 1st, 2016 by Elysiann Bishop

Firming Self TannerWho doesn’t love the look of a real, golden tan, compliments of the sun? The problem is that the short-term beauty of that bronze glow can result in a long-term aging disaster – fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, and even skin cancer. Self tanners can offer an alternative to the sun’s harsh rays, but choose the wrong product, and you’ll look more like an Oompa Loompa than a beach goddess!

That’s where Actifirm Firming Self Tanner saves the day. You won’t find any harsh chemicals or orange streaks here – Firming Self Tanner uses carbohydrates from sugar cane and beet extracts to naturally and safely enhance your skin. A color guide gives an instant glow, making it easier to apply evenly. (more…)

Grill HealthyMemorial Day is Monday, May 30 – a time to honor our fallen heroes. For many of us, Memorial Day means a barbecue surrounded by family and friends, and the day certainly marks an unofficial start to the summer grilling season.

At the same time, making good choices about how you grill can make all the difference in how healthy (more…)
